The Director of the Hellenic Culture Centre, Ms Ifigenia Georgiadou, invited by the European Commission to attend a Brussels Conference on Adult Education
The Director of the Hellenic Culture Centre, Ms Ifigenia Georgiadou has been honored to receive an invitation to attend the Conference "Grundtvig, a decade of European innovation in adult learning" by the European Commission, among 250 educators from all over Europe. The conference was held in Brussels, January 26-28, 2010, and brought together experts in the field of adult learning, European, national, regional and local policy-makers, representatives of successful Grundtvig projects and adult educators. At the Conference, opened by Ms. Marta Ferreira-Lourenco, Head of Unit Adult Education of the Commission, some experts key speakers and policy- makers referred to adult education policies and practices (Ms. Maria Joao Rodrigues, Mr. Alan Smith, Ms. Helene Clark, and Ms. Anne Degrand from the European Parliament)
Interesting workshops on Access to education, on Recognition of non formal learning, on Professional development of adult education staff, on Migrants, Senior citizens, Learners with disabilities and special needs, on Active Citizenship and on the Arts took place.
Ms. Georgiadou presented successful Grundtvig projects where she participates, met representatives of other Adult Education Organizations, and discussed with them about future cooperation.

Examinations for the certificate of attainment in Greek MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, LIFELONG LEARNING AND RELIGIONS CENTRE FOR THE GREEK LANGUAGE GENERAL INFORMATION The Centre for the Greek Language and its function The Centre for the Greek Language (hereafter CGL) was established in 1994 in Thessaloniki, Greece as a non-profit organization supervised by the Greek Ministry of Education. The CGL has been designated as a national point where information on all matters concerning the Greek language and its teaching as a second or foreign language is collected and disseminated. The aims of the CGL are the following: (a) the overall support and promotion of the Greek language in Greece and abroad, (b) the subsequent reinforcement of Greek national identity in the Greeks of the Diaspora, (c) the organization of the teaching of Greek to foreigners in Greece and abroad, (d) the support to teachers of the Greek language in Greece and abroad, and (e) the production of relevant materials which may contribute to the promotion and spread of the Greek language. Researchers at the four academic divisions of the Centre (Lexicography, Linguistics, Support and Promotion of the Greek Language, Language and Literature) work on a number of projects which aim at covering actual needs in the field of language education. A certificate is issued for successful candidates at four levels, A, B, C and D. The examination covers all four language skills, i.e. candidates are examined in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The utility of the Certificate of Attainment in Greek The Certificate of Attainment in Greek: . provides any user of Greek with an expert and objective opinion of the level of their knowledge and language skills . serves as proof of the successful candidate's level of attainment in Greek in the work market . is a requirement for the practice of various professions in Greece . allows citizens of European Union member states to participate in the examination of the Supreme Council of Personnel Selection (AIEII) for civil service positions (The Supreme Council specifies the required level of certificate in every announcement) . at level C allows foreigners to register at a Greek institution of higher education, in case they do not have a Greek secondary education certificate (M.R. 1521B,611504130-5-20- 0O1 official Government Gazette 659 vol.B') . at Level D allows citizens of European Union member states to prove complete knowledge and fluent use of the Greek language and thus be employed in a Greek institution of higher education.
Examination Dates Examinations at all levels are held, for the time being, once annually, in mid-May. Dates for the examination and the submission of applications to participate in the examination are announced to examination centres and all those interested at the beginning of each academic year. The dates are common to all examination centres worldwide.
The Centre for the Greek Language (CGL) will conduct the 2010 examinations for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek on May 1lth and I lth both in Greece and abroad. The dates for registration and examination for the year 2010 arc the following:
LEVEL DATES A Wednesday 1l May (morning) B Wednesday 11 May (afternoon) C Thursday l2May (moming) D Thursday lZMay (afternoon)
Registration: 1 February to22 March 2010.
1 Level A is the first and lowest level, and Level D is the final and highest level as far as the linguistic skills required are concerned.

In Vienna with the European Project “Cross Cultural Friends” |

Meeting in Vienna, 26-29 November 2009 The Hellenic Culture Centre traveled to Vienna with the project "Cross Cultural Friends". Our host was Sabine Wiesmayer and the friends and learner of the Language Centre Das Sympathische Sprachtraining. Approximately 30 persons took part at this meeting, coming from Spain, Italy, England, France and Poland. During the meeting the Centre's associate Vassia Kossiva presented the Greek food customs under the title "Eating and enjoying it... in Greece" (the presentation was prepared by learners of the Hellenic Culture Centre). A similar presentation on food customs was made by participants from Cornwall. The Spanish students of Escuela Oficial de Idiomas of Pozuelo presented the Spanish hotel chain "Paradores". The presentations were attended by representatives of the Spanish Tourism Organization and the "Paradores" hotels. The group visited important site of the city, around the themes of Music and The Arts, participated in a Viennese Waltz class that was organized by our hosts, and baked Christmas sweets with the people of the village Hennesdorf, near Vienna, who welcomed us heartily. The next meeting of the project will take place in Cornwall, England, in March 2010
